When I had my 38 and 48 tagged. I tagged limited farm use and it wasn't to bad. I dropped tags and insurance when I intended to do the body work on the 38 and sold the 48. Haven't tagged the 54 yet so hope it won't be to expensive as I still have the 38 as well.

Pizzaman, you have found the enemy of Big Bolts.

Welcome to the Stovebolt Page. This is the place to ask your questions about anything and everything having to do with your truck.

The big problem with tone-and-a-falk and two-ton trucks is that insurance companies and states look at them as big, commercial haulers. If you get some kind of exemption (historical or antique) that can limit your freedom of using the truck.

I pay about 450 bucks a year to insure my ton-and-a-half with State Farm. That way I can go anywhere, anytime. If you can get your truck registered and licensed as a "farm truck" in Oklahoma, you might be able to do better on insurance, too.

Good luck.

How about some pictures?

Glenn A. Foster,
Could you elaborate a little more about your coverage please? Is it liability only and registered as a farm truck? I also have State Farm and I pay alot more than that for mine. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

I don't know if I a'm comparing apples to oranges but here in B.C. we have to go through Air Care (smog limits)and if I raise my gvw to make it light commercial I elimanate this hassle.Sooo Couldn't you just lower the gvw of the vehicle and save money

I've got a rider policy under a truck that has full coverage through Farmers Insurance. It is a limitted use policy but my agent said I could drive as much as I want as long as it wasn't my primary vehicle. It set the value if it's totalled and they set the premium accordingly. A un/underinsured and liability policy is included. Since I drive them less than 2000 miles per year, this policy works great for me, especially at $20.00 each every 6 months. That's less than 1 tank of gas for one of them and I've got three covered this way. See if your agent can come up with something like that,
Good luck,
Scott

Iowa must have more consumer friendly insurance laws than Texas does. The answer to these questions will vary from state to state but the bottom line is if your state allows them to screw you they will take full advantage of it.

The best you can do is check several companies and ask what different options they offer.

Geographical location plays alot in what your insurance company will get you for.

If you live out in the sticks, i've found insurance is alot cheaper than if you live in (or near) a big city.

I suppose they figure the more cars on the road around you, the more likely you'll hit one of them.

I haven't even bothered to check into insurance on my 46 2 ton, since getting it to that point is still several months away.. but if I can get it insured with straight liability for under $500 a year, i'll be happy.

Your state may vary, but "Farm Truck" tags in Texas are very limited. You are only legal when working on the farm or:

Doctor
Grocery Store
Church
School

That being said, I've seen some brand new Suburbans with FT tags that I know darn well have nothing to do with farm business. Don't know if the owners are bald-faced liars, smart operators, or what.

Hey I checked with my wife's friend who works at an insurance company and got a written quote to simply consider my truck "another vehicle". Also make 100% sure that your DMV, registration history, insurance documents and anything that refers to your truck does NOT use the words classic, hot-rod, or restoration. I had them removed from my paperwork and saved 2/3 my insurance bill. The insurance companies and DMV sometimes "help each other out"
