I am reconsidering the future of my 2 ton dumptruck. Though the 261 has always carried heavy loads really well I would rather put the low mileage motor into a small truck and put a v8 that it always needed into the dumptruck. I understand a v8 is a direct bolt in? Because of the gearing it should be a motor that likes rpms.

But the tranny has always had this noise. I assume it is the tranny. It is a very loud vibrating noise when the truck drives at freeway speeds with no load on the engine. It does fine either accelerating or decellerating with the tranny but let it coast in gear and the noise comes in. I assume this is bearings? My truck has the dumpbed so I guess it is easier to stick with this tranny? What will it need?

I had a trans in my 48 that sounded horrible and was leaking gear lube. I ended up pulling the old PTO box off and running it with out it. The PTO ended up being all of the noise and most of the leak. I know you need that PTO to run your dump but I would see if it needs rebuilt before tearing into the trans.
Just a thought,
Scott

I had a similar vibration/noise with my 2 ton too. It wasn't there all the time just when it was running at certain speeds.
The problem turned out to be the hangar bearing, on the drivshaft, just behind the cab. The rubber packing around the case had worn away and the bearing was loose. Fixing that up eliminated the vibration and noise. It was suggested, on here, that Devcon might have a product. I looked them up and found a product that looks perfect for the job.

That sounds like a possibility. I know it doesn't sound like it comes from the rear end. It sounds like it comes from the tranny or it could come from right behind it. The tranny works perfect otherwise.

You need the right bellhousing to fit your frame and the V-8. The 235/261 bellhousing isn't going to do it. I understand the easiest bellhousing is a '63 to '67 or so.

I don't know about the engine mounts on a '62.

Hmn. I'm having '2 ton truck envy'.

This is amusing to me because that is kinda how I found the 'Bolt. Back in high school(early to mid 90's) I was thumbing through the local truck trader... '1941 1.5 ton chevy truck - no bed - runs great ..less than $2k' and it had a picture... I was like 'oooh - aaahhh' neat... I didn't go look at it cuz I figured I'd have a hard time keeping it running... but I always remembered it cuz I thought it looked neat.

anyway... later on after I had the internet... one night I decided to look for a picture of a '41 chevy ton truck... and found all kinds of stuff, including the 'Bolt. heh.

you might try looking at some wrecking yards for v8 parts
becuse some of those 62 trucks had 283s in them im not shure but some may have had 365 or 409. But by far the easist thing would be to find some parts out of a 62 truck that had a v8
