The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts '63 c60 possible purchase PICs Attached

My next door neighbor has '63 GM c60 (2 ton) cab and chassis with a flat dumping bed on it. It has the 292 inline 6 with a 4 speed trans and 2 speed rear. It is in good to very good un-restored condition (some rust but nothing like I have seen on other '60's trucks). It drives well, has new brakes and clutch. There are no leaks and the dump works well. The trans shifts fine but in 1st and 2nd, it whines but I think that may be due to the gearing being so low. It is quiet in 3rd and 4th. Is that normal? There is some slop in the shifter but it shifts fine.

The sale price is $3500, he is firm on the price. I have had "dibbs" on the truck but I know of 3 who are waiting on me to make a decision and will buy it (I know this as fact).

Is there anything I need to look at / for? BTW the frame rails and spring mounts all look good.

Any help would be appreciated as I have not been able to find out much info on these trucks nor comparable selling prices.

I'm not familiar with the bigger trucks but you said it was good to very good condition which says a lot about the bigger trucks. If you want the truck and satisfied witht the price BUY IT. Don't let a couple hundred stand between you and a dream truck. Besides, if you decide later you don't want it sell it to one of the fellows waiting in line!!! Trucks in that good of shape are hard to come by! Just my thoughts. One expense item you didn't mention was the tires on it. Its different than buying some smaller truck tires! Aw heck, just go buy it.

It has new re-caps on the back and new tires on the front.

If the price is only a few hundred high I will buy it. I just didn't want to find out it was a $2000 truck I was buying for $3500.

What are you buying it for? Just for fun or is it going to do work? It sounds like anything that you might have to spend money on has already been taken care off. Tires are expensive and the rest of the truck sounds very useful. You wouldn't find a $2,000 truck with $500 worth of tires.

On a truck like that, replace all the rubber brake lines first thing.

I want to use it some but I would love to restore it. It looks like a prime candidate for a restoration that would be put to light duty work.

Looks like a great looking truck to me. From the few pics you provided, the hard to find fenders, fender extensions and running boards look to be in great shape, as do the doors, grille and hood. How does the inside of the cab look? And the rocker panels?

As for the price...follow your dreams brother . Don't let a great truck that you are really passionate about pass you buy for a few hundred, or even a thousand dollars. You can always make money...but finding a decent medium duty (which it looks like you have found) is hard these days.

Keep us "Big Bolt" folks updated regarding your purchasing progress. Would love to see another C60 in the forums

Can't help you with the decision, although it does appear to be in pretty good shape!
One thing.. by looking at the grill the truck seems to be a '62 not a '63. Serial number will confirm the year.

Serial # is 3C633N126740. That's 63, right? What's the differnce in grills?

Where are body and mechanical parts available?

BTW Burgie, the rockers are good. The right one has some rust, smaller than a half dollar but the left is solid. The bottom of the doors have a couple holes each but they are smaller than a pencil eraser. I took a screwdriver and poked and hit on all the metal and it wouldn't puncture it. So the metal is still good and strong.

Mine is a 62 and I was looking at that. I thought the 63 had a more straight windshield. But his fenders look a little narrower and so do his running boards. The rest looks identical. Grill looks very similar.

The fender and running board width is indicative of the weight rating of the front axle.

Narrow fenders are on trucks with "lighter" front axle weight ratings and, conversely, trucks with wider fenders and runing boards have "heavier" front axle weight ratings.

I don't know what the cut-off is (example: <7000lb axles = narrow fenders/running boards and >7000lb axles = wider fenders/running boards) but that's the reason for the narrow versus wider fenders...

This trucks tag shows a GVW of 19,500. How do you know how that splits between the front and rear? It has the 6.40 / 8.72 : 1 gears.

That is a nice looking truck, I would jump at it if you got the funding.

The fender flares on these truck changed to the narrow ones in 1963 on the lighter models like stated, but before that they were all wide. Why, well because of the independent front suspension and the LCF model had it on all trucks, my truck is a 1960 Chevrolet L60 Viking LCF so it has the wide flares.

Also Chevy used a different grill in the Bigger trucks then the little ones, and it didn't change every year either.

Good to see you found the site ok Ron, this is about the best place for advise about these old trucks, and Burgie is just about an expert on them because he is rebuilding one from the frame up. I know a bid more about the GMC version of these trucks. back in the day of these truck Chevy & GMC were building two different trucks even thou they may have looked close to the same. Some guys think I'm anti-Chevy, but I own one now and had a 1966 Chevrolet C60 Tow Truck at one time.
