Saw a friend of mine who knows I am working on a 52panel and at a cruise-in tonight he offered me a 95/96 rearend out of a Blazer. Since it originally was set up with springs I wonder if it would bolt down on my 52 springs, and is the width comparable to the AD? I appreciate any thoughts and experience you guys have had or if anyone has done this. I don't want to pass up a good deal. If it works I can "pass on" some good stuff to other bolters. Lets hear it gang.

Need more info. I believe a 4WD Blazer rear end is "width comparable" to an AD 1/2 ton truck. It is about 4" wider than the 2WD.

Most anything can be altered, question is, how much. Unless you want to have it cut and shortened make sure it fits within the fender wells. Give yourself at least 1" between the wheel and the frame. And remember measurements are rarely absolute. That's what makes it so much fun...
Good luck.

Thanks guys. I think I'll measure what I have and take the tape measure with me. The guy didn't say if it was a 2wd or 4wd but hey, Maybe someone can use it if I can't. May as well go get it and add it to the pile!!

Hi,

when talking about the full frame swap for an AD to an S-10, etc. It has always been said that the S-10 pickup 2wd rear end is too narrow, but the 4wd pickup rear end is just right. So,.. is the 4wd Blazer rear end the same width as the 4wd S-10 rear end ?

(thinking similiar swaps myself)

Pretty sure it is. My son got one out of a series 1 4wd blazer and it measures up perfectly for his 51 Suburban. He lucked out and found out it was a posi too after we got it home and ran the numbers on it.

I found that the 2nd and 3rd Generation Camaro diffs were all 62", wheel mounting surface to mounting surface, same as the stock AD. The Z cars also had posi/discs and commonly came in 3.08, 3.42 and occasionally a 3.73. I use the 3.42 from a 2.8L automatic Camaro behind my .72 T5 with a 28.5" tall tire, a 15X7" rim with 4" BS on front and a 15X8 w/4"BS on the rear. Runs 2K at 65-70 in 5th and will drop down to 50-55 without a downshift.

Aside from being cluttered up with a lot of extra brackets that are easily torched off and a 2-5/8 axle tube which is easily shimmed to use 3" u-bolts...they mate up with the S-10 SWB driveshaft and are readily available. Most can be had for between $100-150. which makes them fairly attractive for use with a 235 engine and a T5 transmission.

Just another option that I know fits and works great! I have some pixs in my webshots "shoebox" album of the install. Hope this helps.

Dave

Like Dave said the Camaro axle is a perfect fit at 62", the same as an AD axle.

thanks again guys. I like the idea of disc brakes but as it is now I think i'm going to keep the front axle as it was redone very well by the PO. I still have got to actually go check on the blazer axle as I have not been able to catch the guy. I may just drive over there tomorrow and see if it is a 2 or 4WD. I'll let you know!

Yes Royzel, the S-series blazer & s10 P/U rears are the same. As stated though, the 4wd are the wider units. Not related to this list, but worth mentioning, is that the two wheel drive s-10 axles can be used to replace the 4 lug axles in V8 Monzas and Cosworth Vegas to make them accept 5 lug wheels. - mv

I considered putting in Blazer rear of that vintage in my '42 1/2t PU..I liked the fact that it was 3.42 ratio and had a 6 bolt lug setup. However, it was about 3-4" too wide and the spring perches needed to be cut and re-welded on the otherside of the axle. I ended up using the rear from a '70 Nova which was perfect for my truck.
