So far my best lead on a shifter that won't come thru under the seat is the Patrick's antique kit. I can't afford this. Does anyone know anything about a mounting plate that will move the shifter forward? How about a handle like the C-shape one hurst used to make in detachable form. Now U can only get them welded to the shifter, & I can't really afford this new kit either. | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Cut the handle off and make it whatever shape that you want. That's about the only way to have exactly what you want, Scott | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 363 Member | Member Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 363 | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 58 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 58 | I have a hurst shifter for a saginaw and I have a spare 3 speed C shaped handle that you could weld onto the hurst handle and accomplish what you want. let me know if you want to give it a try.

I've got the hurst shifter, but you wouldn't happen to have some sort of smart mount plate to move it all forward of the tailshaft would ya? Thanks | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 | Not a Saginaw, but I had to fab a bracket to move the shifter forward. Cheap. Easy. http://www.chuckthetruck.com/page12.html | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 83 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 83 | Thanks to chuckthetruck for the idea on homemade mount plate. I figured it would come to something like this for me, and your design looks pretty solid. Sweet Corvair, too, but I've been told those are unsafe at any speed. | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | I made the Hurst shifter work in my old 46 pickup by fabing a new mounting bracket and shortening up the shift rods. Also, there is tons of this stuff on ebay pretty cheap. | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 58 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 58 | I put the 3 spd handle next to the hurst shifter with the straight handle and the difference is dramatic. If you did a little bending you would gain even more. If you want the c handle I would take $5 plus shipping.

I've owned 3 Corvairs, and even the most worn out one handled better than most cars on the road. The Corvair did have some problems, largely due to last minute changes in design and materials. Just before production,Chevy discovered they wouldn't be able to cast the heads in the original design, which was to be one head per cylinder, made of aluminum. They were having big problems with casting the aluminum,so they used a prior design which had been rejected as being way too heavy, cast iron, one head casting for 3 cylinders. That added a bunch of weight to the heavy end of the car. Then the tire supplier was unable to provide the 4 ply tires the engineers had specially designed for the Corvair,so the car was released with 2 ply tires. This made the handling iffy. Add the factory's tendency to set their tire pressures at 24 pounds so the car would "ride nice". A disaster waiting to happen. On my Corvairs,I ran 14" tires, inflated to 35 rear and 32 front, and a GOOD set of shocks, and I never had any trouble with handling, and I didn't spare the horses, either. I was stopped in my '66 Corsa for 136 in a 45,and I used my '65 Monza for frequent 100 mph races on the dirt roads surrounding Elko, but that's a story for another day. speed | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | BTW chuckthetruck; Great looking Corvair-looks a lot like my Corsa only mine was blue. Where'd you find the Cragars? My car had 13" 5 lug Cragars on it when I got it. They sure set off the rest of the car! I traded them for a set (actually two pairs) of 14" cragars with bigger tires, for a higher load rating and more top end. Shoulda kept 'em-they're pretty hard to find now. what engine ya got?My '61 had a 110,my '65 had a 110,and my '66 had a full-boogie 140;AFB,cam,headers and ran 136 at 5,100 rpm. darn-now I have to go find another Corvair to mess with...
