I've sprayed all sorts of penatrating (sp?) fluids all over my brake drums and pried and pulled on the drums and they still won't come off?! Anyone have any thoughts about getting the drums off? Thanks

If its the front you should remove the outer bearing & pull the hub/drum off together. You may have to back off the adjustment if the drum is grooved. If the rear drum is stuck to the axle you can go at it with a hammer & penitrating oil. Make shure there are no clips around the studs or rivets to the flange. If its bad enough you may have to heat the drum. Again back the adjustment up so ther is no interference with the shoes. smile

A can of blaster, and a few sharp raps with a hammer should do the trick. On the rear.

Get a bigger hammer 3lb sledge! Hammer around the drum as if your were doing a 5 lug tire. More then likely it is rusted to the hub (this is rear). If it is the fronts see above.

Good luck

Not enough information- - - - -
Are you working on front or rear, 5-lug, 6-lug, or 8-lug drums? Some front drums are riveted to the hubs, and you need to remove the spindle nut and take hub and all off. Ditto on 8-lug 3/4 ton hubs, front and rear in some cases. On 8-lug rear hubs, the axle shafts must be removed by taking the 8 bolts out of the axle flange, hitting the center of the flange with a big hammer, and pulling the axle out. The spindle nut is accessible then. The 5 and 6 lug rear drums can be rusted to the axle flanges, and/or have deep grooves in the drums that trap the brake shoes. Some pictures, or a better description of what you're working on will help.

Not enough info huh? Well, the other guys seemed to help me out with the problem. I was leaving for work and I had to ask real quick. Now, if you must now, it's a 1/2 ton, 6 lug and all drums are stuck. Thanks guys!

Nice move, Jason.

I'm sure Jerry won't bother you with any more questions.

Ya know what, I really hate forums, because you ask a question and someone comes back with something like this and I said I was running late for work and this is what I get? Well, thanks for nothing!

There are at least 4 different situations that can result in the drums getting stuck to the point where they're difficult or impossible to remove. The removal techniques that work successfully on one type of drum will ruin other types. Since you seem to be unwilling to share some details without getting belligerent, we will be glad to help you out. Which way did you come in?

Whoa man! I don't get it. H.R.L. was trying to help you out and he's definitely one of the nicest and helpful folks you would wanna meet. Before I read "Not enough information", I was thinking the exact same thing and woulda wanted more info. I don't understand why that got you so bent.
I've not witnessed a single intent to be mean by anyone on these forums in the year I've been on. Perhaps a "Lighten Up!" is in order.

I used a large gear puller to put preasure on while the PB sunk in. I let it set a week with a litle more preasure and more PB and it finally broke loose.

I'll second the PB Blaster, patience, and banging on the rears to get them to budge. I didn't have ANY luck backing off the adjusters, mine were stuck fast.

Good Luck!

I've found the best way to remove the drum is to kick it really hard, with no shoes on. Try that and get back to us.

This old truck sure looks neat, but where are the heated seat controls?!?
