I recently discovered that some of the '51's old paperwork listed the truck's original license plate number. I found a company that reproduces license plates and thought one with the original number would be cool. The only problem is that they sell car plates that are marroon with silver numbering. I am certain that truck plates were a different color, but i have no idea what color since they used to change from year to year. Also, I know that cars had a set of two, but I don't know if the trucks had a set, or if they only used one. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

There are TONS of tag collectors, do a Google search and see what pops up or call your DMV and ask them what the official colors were...

What Mike ^ said. Just for giggles I did a search on eBay for "1951 Missouri truck license plate" and didn't find a coresponding plate. The colors were all over the place.

I did find an "Antique" 1992 MO plate, however. nono There ought to be a law against that. That would make me almost a triple antique, I guess. big_eek

On edit: here's a wikipedia article that should help you out. Missouri Plates

8Track
I remember the maroon and silver Missouri tags. May even have a few.
But going back to 51 is before my time.
But I have an 8-Track player somewhere. Do you remember the 4-Track player?

Also, do a search for my location, we should not be very far from each other.

Now this sounds familiar. A couple years ago I decided I'd like a 1951 plate to mount on the front of my truck, mistakenly thinking I'd get fewer "what year is it" questions (no change). It was sorta enjoyable checking all the dusty boxes and bins in junk and antique shops.....no luck. Finely found a very nice plate from an Ebay seller in of all places, New York City! As I recall it was a bargain at $25. Some online sellers were getting $75 for similar plates.

Thanks for the ideas.

Mike - Google shows me that 1951 Missouri truck plates must be as rare as hen's teeth. I can find nothing. I haven't tried the DMV route yet. They are less than helpful most of the time.

Kevin - I agree that a 1992 plate is far from antique. That reminds me of the time I saw an early 90's Mazda Miata running around with Historic Vehicle plates.

Don - I do remember seeing 4 tracks over the years, but I have never owned one. They are still somewhat of a novelty or mystery to me. 8 tracks on the other hand... As far as my location, maybe I should revise my it to read South Central Missouri. I'm in Rolla. Definitely not far away at all, but I don't get to your neck of the woods too often.

Mopar - I have found a few examples of the '51 car plate. I'm not sure if Missouri will let you use a car plate on a truck or not. I was really hoping to have one custom made, since I know what my original license number was from 1951. Without seeing one, I have no idea what color they were, if and where they noted the licensed weight and if they were single year or multiple year plates with tabs. Maybe this is more work than it is really worth. I do enjoy a little bit of the thrill of the hunt, but after a while...

In '37 Missouri had three or more plates. There were two car tags, one is much bigger, and truck only plates. I could not find two truck only, so I use the bigger car tags on my truck. The DMV doesn't care as long as the plate numbers are not in use.

Rolla eh? We had a VCCA tour based out of Rolla a few years ago. Neat area, we had a good time.

I would check to see if you can use car plates, because here in Ontario we can, if the number/letter sequence isn't in use.

.... I say don't tell them anything. When/if they let you run YOM..."year of make" just take them the tag! Probably not that easy but its work a try. You may just get the one lady, or gentleman that does the job!
