I saw this on another website and as I'm no perfectionist, and I like to use my truck as just that, a truck this sounded interesting. I already had a gallon of the stuff to use on my 46 ford frame so I tried it with mineral spirits as advised. I will let you know how it turns out. A 30 footers 30 footer so to speak.

Be very interested to see how it goes. The main thing in painting is to do good prep and have a good substrate. I think a good spray job just reduces the final polish. If you get a lot of paint on and and have a good surface underneath it, then it should be able to be finished out like you like it.

Bessie, hit up your local Orsheln, buy a gallon of Van Sickle tractor paint in a color you like for about $20, and shoot it on (or apply it with a roller or something if you're brave). The stuff it tough - a friend of mine out at Troy uses it for cars all the time, he told me he left an IH tractor painted with it outside for about 10 years before he sold it, without much fading.

Guys I tried the stuff on a tailgate with no prep. It had a good gloss after drying and I hadn't even wet sanded. I agree GMCpanel, spraying it is the way to go but with using the product like this guy did I can see how it would look pretty good. If you prepped and did it right it would look pretty good. Like I said I want to use the truck like a truck but would like it to be one color or at the least two colors. (black fenders red body) The folks on the board say Rustoleum is the same stuff. That's what I used. He must put it on pretty thin though cause he said the first couple of coats don't cover any body work that you've done. He says thin it like water. I had a pretty thick coat on it that had marks in it that flowed out and dried evenly.

So you used a brush? How thin did you get the paint? How long did you have to let it dry between coats?

I used a foam applicator but the guy that originally wrote the thread on the MOPAR website uses a foam roller that's about 4 inches long. I got one and plan on trying it too on something. Read the thread on the MOPAR site.

Hi Bessie,

Thanks for the tip. I read the guy's post, and this sounds like something I can "try". He says you can work on particular areas and not have to do the whole auto at once.

My hood is in very good condition. I could start there. Other parts of the body still need a bit more prep work. The hood should be easy enough to prep for something like this. I figure it's worth a try.

I certainly like the price, and, I figure the worse I can do is screw it up.

Keep us posted on how this works out for you, please.

Bessie, thanks for the heads up. This sounds like something I will probably try sometime. Actually, I have a cousin that used Rustoleum Gloss Black to paint a pickup that he had back in the 80's. He did very little prep work (if any at all) and it still looked good. He sprayed it on instead of the roller method and he even thinned it with gasoline. Still looked good several years later when he traded it in on a new truck.

My dad shot the '63 with Rustoleum since he was using it as a utility truck. The are pros and cons to it.

Pros:
*Inexpensive
*Widely available
*Decent range of colors
*Can use a conventional paint sprayer to apply
*Looks OK for a using truck

Cons:
*The hardnes isn't "quite right." ~It really chips!~
*Doesn't weather especially well
*Not real resistant to gas and environmental agents (road salt)

On our truck, I'm hoping to sand it back down next summer and shoot it with DuPont enamel auto paint. I'm afraid that brittle paint will keep chipping under the automotive paint, so it's coming off.

That's what must be on my truck too. I have a had a few chips in it since I bought it and there seems to be no primer under it. When it chips, it goes right down to the metal and the back of the paint chip is the same color as the top. I'm gonna try to touch it up with the Rustoleum and see what happens.

That's why I recommended the tractor paint over Rustoleum. It does weather well, is hard as a rock, and Orscheln's has it in rattle cans.

Is there a clear coat that can be applied over rustoleum to make it gasoline and chemical resistant?

I like the idea of a $50 paint job on a work truck.

Clear coat costs just as much as regular single stage automotive paint, for the most part.

I think I'm going to give this a shot on the old Fridgidaire beer fridge in the shop (the best beer fridges - says "made only by general motors" on the chrome logo)

I used rustoleum on my front fenders until I can afford a real paint job and it looks pretty good but it dose chip rather easily and I have 4 coats.

I painted an my old Lancruiser with rust olium. It worked well, was easy to spot repair, but faded like crazy in the sun. I don't live in New Mexico either. Just my experience.

tractor paint, tractor paint! TRACTOR PAINT! I don't know where I got this idea, but think GMCpanel is trying to get the point across that farm implement paint is better.

I bought a gallon of implement paint (tractor paint) at my local NAPA store. I thinned it with some enamel reducer and brushed it on my frame. The paint is tough and shines my buddies thought it must have been sprayed on. I paid about $30 for the gallon.

Bess, I painted my 46 coupe with Van Sickle white, with a fine nap paint roller. The weather was hot that day with lots of sunshine, to bake it on. Looks like a spray job. There's a pic of it in the Alternative gallery.
