If you really have reverse to the right and up, you have a New Process 5-speed and Granny is to the left and up!

New Process 5-speed pattern (optional in 1957)

1-2-4-R
..3-5

GM SM-420 4-speed pattern (standard issue)

...1-3
R-2-4

Dots/periods are just page space holders to keep the numbers liner up correctly...

Thanks Mike, looks like I have some worn gears in there so time to pull and rebuild or find another.

So whats the answer...do you have the SM-420 or something else???

SM-420 will only have one PTO location (drivers side), the NP will have one on each side.

If you have reverse toward the dash, its a New Process 540 or 541. 1st is right next to 2nd and in kind of an awkward position. I drove one for 5 years. You may have a 5 speed and just haven't found 1st gear.

And they are a great trans, you get a close ratio 4 speed with a 'granny' for starting out. I put one in an early Bronco behind a Buick 3.8 V6. Normally start out in second. 4 shift rails, so that is where each gear resides-on the end of each shift rail.

It's the NP540. You're right, I never use 2. Most of my driving I don't use the 2 speed cause I'm not going on anything fast enough

Hy Kcfattts57, welcome, reverse will be in one of four positions, from neutral extreme right and up or down, or extreme left and up or down, hope that helps.
