my casting number is 3837004 which to my understanding is a 55-57 235 but also cast into the block just to the right of the casting number is the word SPECIAL

What is the Engine Serial Number that is pressed into the block to the rear of distributor?

ya I know im sorry I finally figured out how to get them om my computer with photobucket but the url which I assume is the letter and number sequence at the bottom of the photo. i type it into the http box and it tells me it cant reach this page. so im am lost

the URL [Uniform Resource Locator] is the address in your browsers address bar when you're at pbucket looking at the picture, like HTTP/www. whatever in the address of this forum page

Go to your picture in Photobucket and copy and paste the entire picture link at the top of your screens (the www.xxxxx). Put the curser on the address, Left click and it should hi-lite the entire address, then Right click and copy. Carry it here and then right click and Paste...done!

the block date casting is con4 j26 which I'm thinking is oct 2 1956 I'm guessing and the engine serial number is FI008A which I do know the I is a one. don't really know the history other then that's what came in it when I bought it.

Most likely it (the "6") is not indicating "1956".

The format for Engine Serial numbers in 1956 was different.

Regarding the "A" in : FI008A
The A indicates a car engine (engine in a car with a standard transmission).
The block most likely had hydraulic lifters (but, it could have been used with mechanical lifters).

My bet, now, is that you have a factory replacement engine that was cast after 235s were regular equipment, perhaps cast in 1966 (maybe in 1976, if GM was still making replacement 235 blocks in 1976).

Maybe someone else has other explanations/postulations/speculations?

Do not get rid of that block. Even if it is bad, someone might want want it for its "peculiarity value".

no sir I don't plan on it! its actually still good was froze up when I got it but got it freed up and running somewhat wont stay idling for some reason. now I think I've got the timing messed up.
