New to the old vehicle scene. I recently purchased a 1949 June build 3100. Previous owner brought it up from Shreveport, LA., 10 years ago and started a restoration. He tired of the project and bought a restored 1950 and the vehicle that I now have became his parts truck. So I have a basket case. The truck is original, but I think the engine has been replaced. Still a 216 but the identification location on the block is blank and the GM part # is for a 216 in the range of 1950-1953 dark gray blue. The head looks like a build date of March 20 1950 and is green? The truck Vin has build date of June 1949.

I am leaning to keeping it original. To check out the compression on my engine I need an intake rocker arm number #6 from a 216 or early 48-49 235 engine. If anyone has one please let me know.

Regards, Nick

Welcome Nick, I'm from southern Ont too. You say the truck is original and then say the engine has been replaced. Just a suggestion, get a slightly newer six banger (1954-1962) because they have better oil pressure and will last longer. They should still bolt right in. Have fun with it and don't be shy with questions. Just post in the most appropriate forum.

Nick, welcome to the Stovebolt. The missing engine number may be because it was a replacement engine???
Oh, and post a Want ad in the Parts Wanted Forum for the rocker arm. There should be many many of them out there. Good luck on your build. We're all here to help you along the journey.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Hi Nick
Welcome. Where are you located.
I too am retired (well, trying to)in Southern Ontario.
My '51 has a '60 engine which I understand was good advice.

When I was researching about the engine, as I was concerned about the no identification number, I came across a statement that replacement block were blank. Since the GM block number was for a 216 after my 1949 June truck build it seems to fit, but I am not positive this is the case.

Nick, if your compression numbers are good, paint it gray and enjoy it. I have a 1964 261. The only way it can be 1964 is if its a replacement block. No numbers on the distributor deck at all! They did some strange things back then. Nobody will ever know your engine isnt original to the truck. If those compression numbers come back poorly, get a 1955-1962 235 or better, a 261 to replace it. A little modification, but nothing earth shattering. Good luck!
