I am looking for a recommendation for some plating work on a door handle . I did a search and thought this would have been discussed but was brought to the "Links" page .

Has anyone used any of the chrome guys listed? I have always felt and trusted word of mouth as a guide .

There have been lots of threads on chrome plating on the site. Just type in "chrome" or "chrome plating" in the site search box and you will find numerous replies to questions about chroming vendors. Pauls is great. I have had a few pieces done there, spendy, but perfect, flawless work. I have also used several others, one in Idaho that is gone now, one in Utah, Utah Chrome I believe is the name. All were good, some more spendy than others, depends on how fussy you are about the result and what you are plating, e.g. steel vs. pot metal etc. and how much work has to be done before plating to get a good result. I usually try googling locally to see if there is someone near first, but, check the previous threads on this site too - you may find someone closer than Pauls that others have recommended. Dale

You may try asking members of a local car club. I would bet that their are several reputable plating shops in your area.

If you can learn to do your own polishing after the parts have been stripped of chrome you can save yourself a lot of money in the replating process,then you take it back to the plater for a little fine tuning and replating.

I have had some plating done at Paul's in Evanscity, Pa. always top quality, but always high priced. Nice thing for me, it's only one hour from home, no shipping involved.

I had 54 grill parts chromed and GMC cast emblems chromed and and clock/gauge trim chromed. Very nice work, done in the time-period they stated, and I think the price was good.

This is an update on my first experience on chrome plating ...

I wanted to have my rear door handle redone and sent it to the company above for an estimate I know that this is an art and there are tons of Gov regulation involved but talk about sticker shock !

I had the handle apart and sent the base and handle
The handle was in about in the same shape as Alvin's in his Tech Tip handle swap

I was quoted $450 !!!!

I thought I would update this post for others who may be looking for a recommendation for companies to chrome their parts .

I called ABC chrome back on 9 January 2015 stating that I have decided not to have my handle chromed and was going to use Alvin's tech tip to make one and sent them a check for return shipping and handling , it was cashed January 13 2015

I called them on January 20th and they said they shipped it

After not receiving my handle I called today [January 29] and was told I still owe them a $100 "Estimating Fee" to which I told them where to place said handle

I can still make a new one using Alvin's tech tip but I am out the bezel part of the handle.

Needles to say I CAN NOT RECOMMEND ABC CHROME to anyone....

Dan,Sorry to hear of your mishap. If I were you,I'd inform them that they just lost a bunch of potential customers,hearing the way they treated you!! That may,or may not steer them straight! I know that if it were MY business,and reputation at stake, I'd think twice! First they say: "The part's in the mail",Then,WHAT?? $100.00 Just to LOOK at it?? That's just CRAZY!! Hope you get your handle back!! If not,contact the B.B.B.!!

contact the BBB and also write a letter to editor of the newspaper in hopes he will print it...even if he hides the name.
......the mail may be slow so give them a day or two extra...but it don't excuse the reply they gave you.

I friend of mine is a retired GM engineer and lives in Vanderbilt and he told me about a very old guy that has a summer shack out on a two track in the woods by the name of Hardy . He also told me the guy has an old car in the garage called a flint Car made by Durant Motors , he thought it was a 1917 and their family does chrome in down state Michigan and he had some pieces chromed

Well I did some research on the Flint Car and found this on Wikipedia

One of our fellow Bolter's has graciously offered me an extra bezel they have ... says he gave me the pick of the litter to boot..... so what I said about "coming around" proves true .

I will not mention the name of this person that you all would know well , and you would not be surprised that he did this , but I will say that soon I will pay it forward ...

Who is it? Maybe we can pay him forward for you. If he doesn't need parts, it IS Girl Scout Cookie season. Just ordered 10 boxes. Since I am currently a biscuit shy of 200 pounds, I figure that if I'm gonna tip the scales, it might as well be enjoyable.

My experience with Chrome Plating has always been good! I always went with the local guys and checked their work before giving them my pieces, or I went with Advanced Plating in Nashville, TN. Advanced Plating is high, but excellent triple show chrome plating. Don't know about these days, but when I used Advanced Plating, sent them the parts, gave me a quote and did a GREAT JOB. Don't recall them charging for an estimate?

Girl Scout cookies....sounds good to me. I too suffer from the "round man" syndrome. I tell my friends who also have this condition that we are "spherically challenged!"

i took a grill for a 1955 1st.
and they wanted $2500.00
i thought that was high
so i painted it.

Did the $2500 include disassembly and reassembly of the grill?
If not, I agree, way too much.
