Sounds like its timed if it starts up and idles fine.
I would check that vacuum line
if the line checks out OK your advance may be shot.
I don't know what the part number is for just the mechanical advance, when I was having distributor issues I picked up a re-manufactured distributor at NAPA auto and it came with a mechanical advance.
