Whats your engine and carb set up?
could be a leak at either of the fittings on the vaccum line from the carb to the mechanical advanced.
check the fittings and check the line for a crack or leak
can you move(advance) the distributor by hand with out the engine running?
It should advance like in the video link I posted above(235 with a carter YF)
