I think it would be very unwise to try and bypass the regulator. It would probably end up incinerating your alternator, battery and maybe the truck.
The full field output test should only be done for a moment. If you do this test and watch the ammeter, remember that for the ammeter to read, it must be passing that current, and the receptacle for this 'hit' is the battery.
The proper regulator will regulate voltage and current gradually, and as needed. The battery won't take 60 amp blasts long before it goes into orbit.
