Carl is referring to the engine serial number that is pressed into the block in the ledge just to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block.

If you have a factory replacement engine, that code might be odd. Depending on state laws and the practice of the installer, a state defined code might be there, or the code on the former/original engine might have been put there (or, any off code might be there).

As you most likely know, the engine serial number was one of the commonly used codes for titling/registering a vehicle. This causes problems when the engine is replaced.

Nonetheless, as Carl asked, what code is pressed into your block to the rear of the distributor?
