Do you have a generator, or is it an alternator? Generator wiring is usually identical between 6V and 12V and the generator regulators look the same, but have different part numbers. Alternator regulators look different or are internal to the alternator.
A generator should have an armature wire and a field wire, and could have a ground wire. Your workshop manual diagram should show what goes where.
