I'm not real clear on your terminology. If you are using a actual generator, not a alternator, your voltage regulator should have three terminals which connect internally to three coils...they look like sewing machine bobbins, is this what you are referring to. If this is true, I don't think your voltage regulator is correct and the charging system will not work properly.

Generator wiring is usually identical between 6V and 12V and the generator regulators look the same, but have different part numbers. Alternator regulators look different or are internal to the alternator.
A generator should have an armature wire and a field wire, and could have a ground wire. Your workshop manual diagram should show what goes where.

I can see your address is on the other side of the pond. The markings on your regulator aren't the traditional items you would find on a stateside regulator. This doesn't mean it won't work though. Is your generator a Delco or unit made in the USA or is it something you have adapted to fit and are using a regulator compatible with it.
The third 'bobbin' that seems to be missing would be the cut-out relay. Did you have some paperwork that told you how to connect this regulator and indicated it would work with your generator. These things aren't hi-tech, but they don't work well when you just mix and match.

On a hunch I looked at the Lucas regulators thinking that you might have done this. Although the terminal designations are different, there description indicates you have it connected properly. Did you polarize the generator. On your Lucas setup, I think a small jumper wire would be momentarily touched between A (BATT) and D (ARM) terminals. I wonder what the A+ terminal is used for?

The earth (ground) strap shouldn't be the culprit if it worked as a 6v. In fact, if your engine didn't have a good enough ground, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't fire for you. However, you can NEVER have too many ground straps, so definitely put that srap on the engine.
