The truck I bought was more project than I wanted... but so far it has not been terrible. I have learned a lot, and I know what is going on. Seeing some rust just means they have not tried to hide the problems.
I would be skeptical of someone else's brake job, you are depending on it... not them. I trailered mine home and I would recommend the same until you know what you are dealing with. A 1 day U-Haul trailer rental and a1/2 truck should do what you need for a 4 hour drive.
