AC generator is just another name for an alternator, regular automotive generators were DC. Generators are long and cylindrical, alternators are short and fat. There will be a box on the firewall to which the alternator is wired if it has an external regulator(the regulator). Are you assuming it's a two speed by the PRNDL, or do you actually feel it shift only once when accellerating from a stop?
