it has to do with amperage loss/voltage drop thru the wiring of the vehicle,resistance of the wiring(esp in a 30-40 y/o vehicle)causes voltage & amp drop. the starter pull-in windings need full supply to operate(esp when hot). the ford solenoid is just a relay(switch) supplying more amperage to the starter(using the larger cables). brian
