Finally, I've been fighting my engine project for a month, just about to give up. I put a fresh head on an old block, rebuilt the carb, did a tune up, even pulled the head and changed head gasket again. The reason for head gasket was I suspected a water leak, turns out my gas can had collected "rain" water, and I was pumping it into the engine. I don't know how important it is but I did "level" my engine, lower in the rear and it STARTED! I retorqued the head and it seems to run OK. Fires right up now, still no verdict on the overall condition of the engine, it has 040 pistons. I'm hoping it was bored to hotrod? Point is I picked up a lot of information on this post, tried them all, so hang in there, mechanical mysteries can be challenging!
