I kind of figured that it was 12v when you said you had a 12v coil with a resistor. The resistor was probably there to take care of the whine caused by the ignition system.
That's why I asked about the colors on the tags.
Glad that you got it going. A full brake job, while expensive, is really quite easy to do.
At least, until you get to the rear wheels.
I recommend two guys with really big hammers.
