I've been using a 1981 12v HEI distributor out of a 250 on my 38 for years no problems with the 6v battery system so that would not prevent it from starting When you connect the fully charged battery do you have a sparkjump as you make the last connection even with all accessories and switches suppositly off? If you do you still have something drawing current.
