Question,would a 12 volt coil powered by a 6volt battery burn the points ? Deffinetly get a 6 volt coil and bypass the resistor,just to see if it starts.You may as well replace the cap,rotor,condensor,plug wires,plugs after you figure out what is wrong.Your original battery was probably shot,and your new one is being drained by so much cranking.Look for broken wires in the wiring harness.
