No. Your alternator should have three wires; one on a post near the center of the back, and two going to terminals on the edge of the back. The one in the center should go directly to the battery, and that is what charges the battery. The two on the top should go to the ignition switch, coil or ballast resistor (B) and to the center post on the alternator (A).
Without a diagram, I can't be sure, but it sounds like your wiring is bypassing the ballast resistor completely. Are you still using point? If so, have you been going through a lot of them? Could you possibly post a picture of your alternator?
