on mine I pulled the valve cover and cranked it over by hand. I could see the vlave being pushed back up by the piston. So you can try that if you want. Makes sence to have a head shop do it. But I am cheap and just put on springs. Has not failed me yet. But I will rebuild the head some day down the road.
