Thumping on start up could be the crank bearings. What you describe is the way my Dad described it.
Builder is right get a oil pressure gauge on it. I have a mechanical that I bought at a motorcycle shop, and use to check oil pressure. I keep it in the tool box to check pressure when there is no oil pressure gauge or I doubt the gauge.
