LG, I've heard from several people that it's possible to change out the gearset in these rear ends without having to swap out the whole axle/rear end. Someone once told me (actually it was the previous owner) that the truck would work well with 3.73 gears. The yoke on the rear end (the part that connects to the shaft) is worn and vibrates a bit under higher speeds, so I think I may have this done pretty soon, to get the rpms down a little. The engine has to rev pretty high on highways....don't know how high...I dont have a tach, unfortunately.
