The 305 may have felt fast at the time, because Detroit had nothing really any better. But I remember wiping out those 305 Z28's routinely with a turbocharged, 4-cylinder Shelby Charger......The typical quarter mile times for those was in the 15 to 16 second range. And my Shelby Charger when it was stock, would do a high 14 second quarter. 5.0 Mustangs and Z28's could not keep up with it.

I had an '83 Trans Am with the L69 305, 5-spd and factory 3.73 gears. I added a cheap ($129) Dynomax cat-back, K&N filter, bumped the timing up, and shortened the stock shifter, and I ran a best 14.55 at 99 mph. And this was in 1995. Some of my friends say that it was a "freak." I sure do miss that car.
