That’s right along the lines that I was mulling over in the old head Jerry. I have a Miller Tig welder and would probably Tig weld through the rivet holes of I did try it. Also have a couple of Bridgeport’s, and a 6” and a 16” lathes so fixturing it wouldn’t be a problem. I am worried about getting it dead true, might not be to noticeable while beatin’ around on the old dirt, but at 55 on a smooth paved highway it would have to be pretty true. When we were running the midgets and sprint cars on the pavement 120 or 130mph was not to unusual and the rims needed to be pretty true, of course magwheels not steel.
If you looked at the pictures you would have seen that I already have drilled out one center to see how it would fit one of those 16.5” rims. Both centers are 14.125” out side dimension, don’t know if that is standard for Chevy 3/4 ton 8lug wheels but like I said before what I would need are some decent old 15” split rims that aren’t all rusted out to get the centers out of and I could either buy new rims somewhere or find junkers like I have off the ’77, 4x4 and drill out those centers. The old rivet holes could be filled very easily. On the same note, anybody know how they seal the rivets in the tubeless rims like the one that’s in the pictures above? Or does anyone know of a wheel maker around Chicago, IL that could supply new rims or maybe even swap out my old centers in their jigs and re-drill and rivet them?
