Mine had a big fat grommet in it with a small hole (1/8 inch) I can imagine only a wire would fit through. There was nothing in there but the grommet when I got it, but the 47 to 54 assembly manual shows the sending wire going down through a hole in the cab floor a few inches forward and several inches to the left of the hole directly under the tank.
