olblu,
This gets more and more confusing. The original tank on my truck had a sending unit with no fuel line outlet on it. The mounting surface on the sender is a solid plate with 5 holes for screws and one contact for wire connection. The tank had a 3 inch long 1/8 in nipple coming out of the bottom which passed through the floor opening/grommet.
I see in the green book the set up you are talking about but in LMC and Classic parts catalog the sending unit for 53 has no fuel line attachment. As a matter of fact the LMC book states that 47 to 53 had tank mounted fuel lines.
I know when I test ran the truck I would have to have the gas supply higher than the fuel pump or no gas would flow. This could be due to many of the other "test" conditions, but it made sense that fuel would travel out the bottom of the tank.
What kind of sending unit do you have. Is it new or original?
