I'm not intimate with the big box stores so I don't know about them. A ACE or True Value would be my first thought. Be sure to get the tap drill too if you're going to attempt this.

As Beaver noted, maybe 1/8" pipe would be sufficient...don't go larger than the original, and measure and make sure you have the meat in the nut (just like you pointed out).
