OK, back again with what I'm pretty sure is the issue. Truck has been running fine on some longer cruises (80-100 miles). Today I took it on about a 45 mile run. Problem back with a vengeance - occurred about 8 times, both after adding gas and sometimes just pulling away from a stoplight. This is kind of what I was hoping for - a frequent enough occurrence that could be diagnosed. Same deal, running through the gears and it would start starving for gas, then it would pick up for a second and then starve again four or five times before it settled down. Got pretty close to home in case it died. Got on a flat surface and set a high idle with the throttle. I have two glass fuel filters, the one built into the fuel pump and another one right before the carb. The filter before the carb frequently ran dry and then a bit of gas would spit into it. The clear bowl on the fuel pump showed gas surging but never completely filling the bowl and some air bubbles as well. It appeared that the pumping action was very uneven. Looks like running through the gears would sometimes cause the float bowl to empty, starving the engine. Then the fuel pump would hit a few licks and the engine would pick back up again. Not sure where the air is coming from. No leaks anywhere. I'm thinking fuel pump rebuild time. Thoughts?
