Ignition coils predate diodes about like Pterodactyls VS the space shuttle. The closest thing to induction dampening in a point type ignition system is a pretty primitive capacitor that tries to prevent flashover across the point contacts when the magnetic field collapses across the primary windings. It shunts the voltage spike to ground long enough for the points to get a few thousandths of gap established before the condenser charges fully. Then the condenser must discharge and recharge several times to dissipate the voltage before the points close again.
