Jerry, a really good explanation. I know that when microcontrollers switch relays or motors that have inductive coils there is a usually a flyback diode in parallel with the coil to prevent voltage spikes from damaging the controller. Are diodes ever used to prevent high back current from the collapsing magnetic field in automotive coils?
