I am by no means an expert or even a novice but had some similar questions on my 6 volt system.
I was told by others on here that no 6 volt system should use a resister - internal or external.
So, I replaced my internal resisted coil to non-resisted. I also do not have an external resistor.
Maybe some others on here can give a better explanation of why - it has to do with voltage drop at starting.
