Pull the plugs and lay them out side by side, you should see the oil burner(s) if it coming in on the intake side. If the exhaust guides are worn, you might not see the oil on the plugs.

I freshened up, a '85 Dodge 318, rings and a valve job over a weekend once. I used cast iron rings because of money and time. That thing used three quarts of oil in 20 miles, had to add oil just to get home from work. I drove it three days till new moly rings came in. After changing the rings, it still smoked for weeks till the exhaust was cleaned out! On the plus side, the exhaust lasted 200,000 miles.
