I've used a Battery Tender in the past, but you need to be careful. I had a vented battery and when I tried to start it months later, the battery blew up - big hole in the side. I guess the acid slowly vented out and it was only about half full. When I tried to start it, I'm guessing the air gas ignited.
Checking the water level in all the cells should be regular battery maintenance whether a battery maintainer is used or not.
