A used vintage evaporator underdash (I.E. 60's mustang or Mark IV), a sanden compressor, drier, expansion valve and condensor, all available as DYI, is another way to go. Hose it all up and have it filled with R-134A or r1234yf. R134A still readily available. This DIY method is still done by many. I have done it. Not as cheap as the $500 12V kits I see online. Probably about double but sure has been a proven system here is Arizona.
