I drill and tap two 5/16-18 holes in the cam gear and use a steering wheel puller to remove it from the cam. That avoids destroying the gear, and gives me easy access to the cam thrust plate screws. The same puller will also work on the crank gear. Why rent or borrow a puller when you can have your own for less than the cost of a Burger King Whopper combo?
