I suspect that "rule" assumes that it was set correctly at the factory and they don't want a user to mess up the initial calibration. Given that something is clearly wrong with the box as currently set up, I would not be terribly concerned about following the box.

I figure you have two choices:
1. Try adjusting it further like Jerry said and see if you can tighten it up and make it work.
2. Remove it and try and get CPP to replace it with a hopefully better one.
