You can use a voltage reducer, but you don't need one, Darren. Your fuel gauge cares more about amperage than voltage. However, my work has shown if you use the gauge at 12 v it will not register properly at 6v again. The permanent magnet inside the gauge is magnetized more strongly and that alters it forever.
