Running the ground cable to the motor should be okay, just make sure you are making a good solid connection to clean unpainted metal.

You also need a ground connection to the frame. A cable from the motor end of your ground cable to the frame should make it work. If you don't also ground the frame you'll have trouble with headlights and fuel guage and most anything else electical that is not mounted directly to the motor.
