When I was a kid in the late '50's, My favorite hang out was the local garage run by a classmate's dad. The average customer's car would be late 40's' or early '50's. To keep them dependable enough to start on every cold morning and get you to and from work as well as everyday errands, he often did valve jobs every 40,000 miles and major overhauls around 60 or 70 along with the second valve job. Tune-ups came much more often. Side note: His shop was heated by a pot-belly coal stove. an elevated tank with a small copper line let used oil drip very slowly on the coal which mad one fill last all day.
