Congratulations on finding a vacuum leak! I have done many tests with the unlit propane torch and have never found one (never had any leaks to find). My only satisfaction from this method was putting the torch over the top of the carb just to hear the engine rev.
Hopefully your only problem is the vacuum leak, although your description of your symptoms reeks of multiple problems, the most difficult scenario to diagnose.
