I always thought a progressive 2 bbl would be the way to go....

The late production (early '80s) 292 used a progressive 2 bbl, the Rochester 2SE, also known as a the Vari-Jet. Might be a viable option, and is a rather common carb used on GM V6 engines in addition to the 292.
