Just reading where all AD’s had a pinstripe around the belt line. Is that a fact???
I thought I had read elsewhere that not all of them did. So who can you believe? Does anyone have any documentation for this?
My 1950, 3604 does not have a pinstripe and I’d stake my life on it that the cab as never been repainted. Originally it was Mariner blue when the fire department bought it new and some time after acquiring it they painted it red. The prep was not very good, looks like they just wiped it down one nitht and shot some rattle can red on it with out sanding it, so it's peeling all over the place. The belt line is exposed in several places and there is no sign of a pinstripe, even when you look real close with a 10x loope.

This is all I know, my two 48's with the original paint still intact DO have a single stripe going aroung the beltline. They appear to be hand painted because they're fading along with the rest of the paint. My 55.1 COE doesn't have one.

Denny,
My 53 had its original green paint and a beltline stripe in a yellow-cream color. I could not see stripes on the grill bars, although one I picked up that was the same color green and original had the same color stripe. The pinstripe guide I picked up from Jim Carter gives the location, width etc for the beltline stripe, it seems it is a photo copy of an original document.
Regards,
Mike

Yes Mike, I've seen that photocopy, I'm questioning whether it is valid for all AD's. I wasn't aware of any pin striping on the grills either, wheels, yes but not grills. Maybe an embellishment by a PO???
Tks Scott, that is something along the lines of what I remember seeing. That is that the early ones did and the later ones didn't. I'm kind of thinking that they made a change in 50 along with several others changes that year.

Denny,

A single, body-pinstripe and two or three pinstripes on the wheels were a no-cost factory option but they were not standard (stripe colors/codes are in the 1950-1951 Truck Data Book).

I think there was a pinstripe on the painted grill in 1947-48.

That is correct, early ADs had pinstripes on the grille bars. And I believe all pickups had the beltline pinstripe, now if it was 1/8 or 1/4 inch, well, that has been discussed a lot, but I still believe the Chevrolet plan was 1/4 inch, despite the fact it seems some factorys made it 1/8. I found a set of original wheels and those stripes were 1/4 inch also.

Brian,

I have seen both 1/8 and 1/4 on the body stripe and on the wheel stripes. I agree, it's not worth arguing about - both are right (as are 3/16th stripes, I bet).

My 1954 Suburban had a 1/8" body stripe. If it ever had wheel stripes, I'll never know. However, I had 3 x 1/8" wheel stripes painted on my Suburban's wheels.

Tim is that "1950-1951 Truck Data Book" an original book? The only truck data book that I have access to is the copy that the vendors sell, and it copyrighted 1949. I does not mention this option anywhere, however, it may be an abriged version because the index lists "Paint-options and Matching Duco Numbers pg 199" yet page 199 is for Truck Lubricants.
Man, I feel like this has been discussed before.

Denny,

I slipped a year. I have the original 1949 Truck Data Book (dated July 1, 1949) with the original 1950 Truck Data Book Supplement (dated March 15, 1950). On page 209 in the 1949 Truck Data Book (the index is incorrect on page numbers for Options & Accessories) is: OPTIONAL TRUCK EQUIPMENT 1949 Color Combinations - Options No. 234 & 235. The striping colors are show for all exterior colors.

The only color option that changed in 1950 is that the Carryall Suburban now had the same standard and optional exterior colors as other trucks.

I also have an original 1947 Truck Data Book (dated September 1, 1947). The striping colors are show for all exterior colors.

Do you have a 1950 Restoration Pack manual? It should list stripes with all exterior colors.

Are you questioning the availability of optional body stripes and/or wheel stripes for 1950 (or any year) Advance Design trucks?

Just adding to the database Tim, thanks. Yes page 209, don’t know why I missed that, I went thru the whole book 3 or 4 times page-by-page.

These body stripe is an option that I was unaware of. I knew a body stripe was applied to some years and to some wheels. So it looks like the wheel stripes were standard on All the trucks, just different colors, right? As far as the body and grill striping I still don’t see any reference to that, unless it is only in the resto pack. I’m just trying to correlate the years that all this belongs with.

I’ve never saw the 1950 supliment; I’d sure like to see that posted, like on TOCMP, hint, hint. Or, maybe it’s already there and that’s another thing that I’ve missed?

And yes, I have the Restoration Pack, I'll take a look, I never noticed it there before. That will be a little while before I can get to it.

I like the way the stripe sets off the cab. Since there is absolutely no way for a judge to tell whether the truck was ordered with the stripe or not, I think I will add it as a finishing touch when I get into the cosmetics if it was appropriate for the year.

Tks

Ok, just looked thru the resto pack for my truck, 1950, 3604. Since I have the 7.00x15 tires/wheels there was no stripe on these wheels. And it does appear that there was “One stripe of Cream Medium Striping Duco” on the Cab with the 234G, Mariner Blue color option. As far as the grill, I still see no reference to any pin striping.
I wonder why there is no evidence of a stripe on my belt molding????
Oh, and thanks for the input TC, very helpful as usual.

The cab pinstripe was optional - I had a 1948 panel truck and it had no pinstripe. Jim Carter, I think, made the comment that the pinstripe was put on if the truck-color (or, if a truck with pinstripe) was ordered from the factory. I think he also suggested that sometimes the pinstriper (at the factory) would randomly put a pinstripe on a standard truck as it passed along on the assembly line (out of boredom, or having spare time and a wet brush with the right pinstripe color)?

Regarding pinstripes on wheels: some documents state they were only applied to 16" wheels? Some people say they were only painted on wheels that were painted body color? I recall seeing documents for certain years that said that two stripes (instead of three) were painted on some of the larger truck wheels (I'll look tonight)? No one really knows, unless you find a living pinstriper.

Not clear Tim, on what you mean by, "if the truck color was ordered from the factory." Weren't all the trucks painted at the factory??? Or do you guys mean if it was ordered with special paint from the factory it may not have a stripe? According to the 1950 resto pack, all the cabs were striped at the belt line.

As far as the wheel stripes go, the resto pack is pretty definitive in its description of which ones had stripes and just how many they had, pages 68-69. Looks like the only ones that had three stripes were the 6.00-16 Reg, 6.70-15 RPO 3100’s. The 15” 3600, 3700 Reg and 3100 RPO had none. And in the 17” 3800, 3900 Reg and 3600, 3700 RPO they had two. In the big trucks, 3800, 3900 RPO Dual with 18” and 4000, 5000, 6000 Single or Dual 20”, they also had none.
What got me goin on this is thread over on the VCCA chat II about the same thing, so I hope I’m keeping it all straight as to who I’m conversing wit!
I think I’m pretty clear now as to what my 1950, 3604 truck with the standard paint option 234G, Mariner Blue, should look like. It will have the Medium Cream 1/8” stripe on the belt line and black 15” 2pc wheels with no stripe, 7.00-15 tires. Outer grill will be the truck color with Waldorf White inner grill. That orta pretty much take care of it and I doubt if any of those there VCCA perfectionists will be able to pick away at the way she’s made up. Still fighting that engine color though Chevs of the 40's went and changed there paint supplier to Hirsch and it's to light. They had it right with the Krylon formula but they just had to change it.

I would bet that a truck ordered with a non-standard color would most likely have a beltline pinstripe.

I know that the pinstripe was not put on all "standard color" A-D trucks but I also know that standard color trucks might have had the pinstripe. (how's that for a complex sentence?)

I realize that there was really no "standard" color each year - all colors were available as a no-cost option. However, there was common color for each year - might as well call it standard.

I have a new challenge, I am going to pinstripe the truck, now I need to find the correct color. I was on Tim's site and got the stripe color information - I am painting the truck burgundy maroon, so the stripe is gold bronze. I called the PPG jobber and tried to use the Dupont references off the site and they did not come up with anything. I then called the PPG color Library and got a really nice guy on the line, but he could not come up with a match. Has anyone done any matches on the pinstripe color?
As always - thanks for the help!
Mike

Denny, have you checked the Filling Station Engine paint?
I belive it is about as close to correct as you will find, although pricey.
