just bought a 1949 6400. I was told it was a 216. engine block code starts with GEA. I read that this is a 235. any insight.

engine has bolts thru top of valve cover!

A 235 would have been stock.

235 is correct, this engine was manufactured and installed in the larger trucks under the name Loadmaster. The 216 equipped models went under the name Thriftmaster. More details on the engine and trucks is here:

As you posted, GEA is 6xxx series in 1949.

As posted above, the standard 5xxx-6xxx series engine in 1949 was a 235.

I noticed that in the big bolt review they mentioned that the 6000 series had a drive shaft emergency brake. My new 6400 has cables that go to the rear brakes. Is that typical?

thanks for all your help….If i want to change all fluids, what do you recommend? weight etc.

I have parted a couple 2-tons that had the cable actuated brakes so they could be configured that way. On the fluids you can just follow the manual recommendations these trucks do not need synthetics or anything to fancy. Owners manuals are available for your truck from a variety of the vendors for a reasonable price if you do not have one.
